Mudeford Sailing Club

editorial, by mike roach

It seems that by an extraordinary coup we have achieved truly independent status and our medium* term future as a Club. Many congratulations to all those involved in the initial concept and long-drawn out negotiations, particularly to Mark Gardener and Peter Nicholson, who although they may deny it in public, were really the movers behind the whole process.

I was slightly surprised when he mentioned my unsuccessful shot at the same target a couple of years ago, but I’m glad it planted the seeds of what is obviously a far better solution.

But are we actually secure?  I’m afraid that the answer must be “not until we repay the generous benefactor.”  To do that we must now move seamlessly into two years of fund-raising and donations.

So here I am on my high horse again.

I don’t think anyone else will put it so bluntly, but will all those amongst you who so vehemently opposed any dilution of our independence at the AGM two years ago, now stump up the cash to make sure Mark, Peter and the Committee’s work has not been in vain?  This freehold and right of access comes at quite a cost: are you going to help pay for it? Yes, you, who held your hands up to oppose a cost-free alternative, are you going to dip those hands in your pockets now that the time of reckoning has arrived?

Mike

*In the long term the Harbour will either:

A. Flood over the top at every High Springs as global sea levels rise, or

B. Gradually silt up. Take your pick!

But perhaps this current crop of members will not be around to see either outcome...
