mudeford sailing club

training and juniors

Novice and Junior sailors are very welcome at the Club and have special training and racing arrangements made by our training team. Please remember that the Club is not a creche!  Juniors are to be accompanied by an adult to assist if necesary with rigging, etc.  Parents are encouraged to take a full part in the training and racing scene as assistants, helpers and safety cover.

The more experienced Juniors are encouraged to race with the 2-lap Fleet in all our racing.  We find that Optimists often beat Lasers on handicap! Generally speaking, a well-sailed Oppi will do 2 laps to a Laser’s 3, making the mid-race break a family occasion.

Sail Training Sessions at Mudeford Sailing Club

During the season, usually on Saturdays when the wind and tide allow, we organise Sail Training Sessions from the Club on Fisherman’s Bank. Less experienced sailors of all age groups are welcome to join in - these are the calendar dates.

These sessions are run by our more experienced dinghy sailors, on a voluntary basis. We do not classify ourselves as a Sailing School.

The aims of the sessions are to improve boat handling skills and to guide newcomers into the sport of dinghy racing, and rule observance.

When children are involved parents, or guardians, are requested to play an active role in assisting with the sessions.

(A child protection guidance policy and procedures is available upon request).

Safety is a priority and in consequence it is mandatory that anyone involved in the session should wear a buoyancy aid, of at least 50N capacity, before taking part.

The Club has two Optimist, three Topper and two Laser sailing dinghies available for its use, plus a small number of buoyancy aids. These can be used during our Training Sessions, for a modest contribution towards Club funds and the maintenance of the boats.

Please consult the Racing Diary for the dates, and times, of the sessions.
