Mudeford Sailing Club’s Model Yacht Group is new for 2011. The aim is to enjoy sailing and racing: specifically the RC Laser, but any type of radio controlled model yacht is welcome to take part.

Membership of the Group is open to any Mudeford SC member, at a cost of £1 per day’s racing for 2011. In 2011, guests may also race just for this fee. Fees will go towards prizes at the end of the season. A more formal subscription may be introduced by the Group Committee for 2012.

The basic specifications of the RC Laser can be seen at http://www.westbourne-model.co.uk/lazer-radio-controlled-model-yacht-1993-0.html and thanks to a discount agreeement with Westbourne Models, getting started is very reasonably priced. All RC Lasers are indentical and conform with the RC Laser Association’s rules. You cannot buy a “good” boat - they’re all the same, easy to sail, hard to sail well.

Anyone wanting to try out the sport can just come along and have a go on a racing day, or arrange to meet one of the Group for some personal introductory sailing.

Our racing venue is the water off the end of Argyle Road and the Group is led by Phil Sowden. The 2011 programme is just an experiment and will be refined as interest and involvement grows. There is no age limit on taking part and family or other teams may share boats.

Initially we will stick with the “given” rig, the B Rig (equivalent to a Radial) but if there is the demand, A and C rigs will be allowed.

Racing will be bound by the same tides that affect our full-size sailing and we will not schedule it on the same programme days.

Races will be short and sweet – maybe 10 minutes each max, with a schedule of races 90 minutes or a couple of hours, depending on enthusiasm.. Anyone who wants to stay beyond that would be welcome to continue practicing, but points scoring stops after racing officially finishes.

Phil may drop in temporary marks once there are boats on the moorings - we’ll just have to review the situation at the time.
